Emotional power builds in the incandescent fragility of Penelope Antena’s voice on “Bonfire,” the third single from her new album, James & June. Elegiac piano chord progressions are accented with subtle yet sharp electronics, creating a shattered glass sonic foundation for Antena to lift off. Antena’s vibrato cuts through the atmospheric pressure and pulls us forward. Each word is a beautiful dagger as “Bonfire” rises higher even as we feel tethered to the ground stuck in reminders of broken hearts and the things we try to leave behind.
